World Cup 2026: How did England’s players rate during the tournament?

Ezri Konsa: The Aston Villa defender has featured in every game and continues to show his quality for international football. A starting centre-back and also played at right-back in the quarter-final win over Norway. He finished the tournament with a goal in the third-place playoff. 7

John Stones: Thomas Tuchel considered taking Stones as a gamble considering his fitness issues. He started the first game, had some shaky moments and was dropped for the next couple. But he regrouped and started in the quarter-final win over Norway and the semi-final loss to Argentina. The 32-year-old showed his quality but Lautaro Martinez’s low ball caught the winner. 7

Mark Guihy: Head of England’s backline in major tournaments. Guehi did not start the opening game against Croatia but showed his usual composure and quality when he did come on. Guehi put in an excellent performance against Manchester City team-mate Erling Haaland in the quarter-final against Norway and continued to perform well until England’s exit. 8

Trevo: Let’s go The Chelsea defender was named as a replacement for Tino Livramento. It was a decision that sparked much controversy as it was felt that it left England short in the full-back area. Chaloba was brought on in the closing stages of the win over France for just a few minutes of the tournament. 5

Jarrell Quansah: It was Quansah’s first major tournament and he was arguably a surprise pick in the 26-man squad. But the Bayer Leverkusen defender has shown why Tuchel is so keen to have him as a full-back option. Kwansah started well against Panama before getting injured, then did the same against Mexico before the bye. He came back for a third-place playoff and has a bright international future. 6

Dan Burns: The Newcastle defender’s inclusion was the subject of much debate but his performance against Mexico underlined the argument. Burn’s aerial prowess gave England a way to see out games, although Tuchel turned to that tactic early on when trying to see out victory over Argentina. 6.5

Nico O’Reilly: It was the 21-year-old’s first tournament and he grew into it after a nervous opening match. O’Reilly only became England’s first-choice left-back in November, and to go from there to the World Cup and start five out of eight matches has been impressive. O’Reilly is very good on the ball but can improve defensively. 6.5

Reese James: The Chelsea captain said it was “frustrating” when people discussed his fitness, but the first-choice right-back missed three matches against Ghana after picking up a hamstring injury. He recovered and showed his quality to play in the quarter finals and semi finals. 6.5

DZ Spence: The Tottenham full-back was one of England’s best players of the tournament. Spence’s ability to play at both left-back and right-back is highly valued in tournament football. He is a very good one-on-one defender and his speed gives teams an outlet. He produced two of his best performances in the quarter-finals and semi-finals. He played well against Spain and won the penalty. 8
