A great – and in a way hopeful – apocalyptic drama, which should have been loved when it began to spread in 2022. (Perhaps the story of the plague that destroyed 99% of the world was very close to home.) It is set across two periods, with the young actress Kirsten (Matilda Lawler) supervised by the writer Jeevan flue; 20 years later (now played by Mackenzie Davis) travels with the Traveling Symphony. It may have been the only time this was ever mocked before but now the reformed rock band has had its Albert Hall moment. Stuart Maconie presents a selection of the most difficult songs, with songs by Genesis, Jethro Tull, Mike Oldfield and Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Phil Harrison

Boris Johnson: The Kill Zone in Ukraine

Our former prime minister passes through Kyiv to see the reality of modern warfare up close and assess the human cost of the war in Ukraine. Joined by the Ukrainian military, he visits destroyed villages, a mosque, drone bases and a bomb factory. PH

The Dink (Josh Greenbaum, 2026), Apple TV

There’s a lot of fun to be found in sports stars who are still living through history. In Josh Greenbaum’s romantic drama, that character is Dusty “the Hammer” Boyd (New Girl’s Jake Johnson), a failed tennis pro who is now reduced to teaching nine-year-olds at his father’s country club. Father Chuck (a wonderfully antagonistic Ed Harris) is waging a war against tennis’s ever-increasing “coronavirus of sport” – and his son is determined to cheer him on. But when Dusty explores the new game, he meets a grumpy old woman Candace (Mary Steenburgen, delightful) and his priorities change. Simon Wardell

Preschool (Josh Duhamel, 2026), Winner +
Michael Socha is becoming an actor, and his frustration is put to good use in Josh Duhamel’s title about a ridiculously competitive father. Brian (Socha) and Alan (Duhamel) only want the best for their children – but when there’s only one place up for grabs at an exclusive private school, they’ll do anything to beat the other man. Antonia Thomas and Charity Wakefield play some vivid parts, reduced to spectators at the men’s sports in the same group involving indoor flying, judo, padel violence and more. SW

Single 11-year-old Lacy (Zoe Ziegler) just wants to get back to summer camp early. So for the rest of the holidays his world revolves around his acupuncturist mother Janet (Julianne Nicholson). Pulitzer-winning playwright Annie Baker’s childish drama about adult relationships, in which Lacy faces events related to her mother who only understands or cares for her little – from Janet’s problems with her boyfriend Wayne (Will Patton) to meeting Sophie Okonedo, a fugitive from a religious cult.
