It took me a while to log in Esoteric EbbA new CRPG from developer Christoffer Bodegård. Elevator directions actually Disco Elysiumbut in an imaginary way of Dungeons & Dragons: You play as the leader of a small town who is trying to find out, among other things, the secret of why the town’s tea shop exploded, and all the while, you are talking to different characters in your head. Like Disco Elysiumyou see the world from an isometric, top-down perspective. Also if Disco Elysium, Esoteric Ebb they want a more reading, weighing the ideas of your competing words, and making bold dice that don’t always work. The first few days I played the game, I felt like I was playing slowly and aimlessly. But by the end, I found myself hooked – laughing louder than I have at any game in recent memory.
When you start Esoteric Ebbyou build your leader by giving you different skills – traditional D&D such as strength, wisdom, and influence – and the basis of looking to give your reputation. There are also a few pre-built characters if you don’t want to spend too much time, and I chose the one with the highest stats, “The Unsettled Leader,” because I like engaging dialogue in this type of game. (This method also has a super skill, which was great for looting people.) After setting up my character, the game’s introduction told me that I was “the dumbest shepherd imaginable.” You may find other explanations for your preacher based on your basic stats, but for me, it was very useful to make; instead of trying to find the “best” result, which is what I usually like about RPGs, I instead follow my own stupid ideas to see what happens.
In time, this led to all sorts of silly moments. As part of the ongoing election campaign, I encouraged everyone to vote for me, promising that I would rule as a magical king. (Many citizens care about my opinion.) Once, while fishing with a merman who was also the owner of the house, I chose to talk about biting my tongue instead of saying that my friend was a merman, and the game explained how my character bit his tongue so that blood pooled around his shoes, which the merman apparently ignored.
From time to time, you will encounter war situations. Although it’s still mainly weaving in conversation, you will have difficult rolls that can affect the outcome of the fight. I died often, but since I usually saved things before we encountered useful things, this wasn’t a big deal. You can point to change events, change your dice, or open new opportunities to talk to all kinds of characters in the game. Until I talked to a big snail.
Looking back, I think that my first experience, not looking at it, was what I expected Esoteric Ebb. Like a good fantasy novel, it takes a while to settle into the world of the game, and as time went on, I realized that the characters were connected in ways that would reveal themselves slowly. For example, when I bit my tongue in front of a merman, he told me a strange fact about the history of my priest.
Esoteric EbbThe introduction is signed by Bodegård, and says “we will play” about 5 to 8 levels. It sets the tone that you are in the hands of a Dungeon Master who has worked hard to create an interesting campaign but will also work with your instincts to create an interesting adventure. Bodegård wins, wholeheartedly. Near the end of the game, I was so engrossed in the story – exploring all the absurd events I could – that I raced to see it through to the end. Somehow, the narrative threads managed to connect, making my 16-hour journey worthwhile. I learned that even my shaky pastor can be a hero.
Esoteric Ebb now available on Steam.
