The French team competes with England in the “mini-final” of the World Cup
France star Kylian Mbappe will be the most notable survivor of the rotation that coach Didier Deschamps will use to face England in America, Canada and Mexico at the 2026 World Cup.
The French national team will meet their English counterpart at midnight on Sunday at the Hard Rock Stadium in the US city of Miami to decide the third and fourth places in the 2026 World Cup, or the so-called “mini-final”.
French TV channel Canal+ Foot reported that Deschamps decided to make several changes to the starting line-up after the Roosters lost their chance to win the title after losing 2-0 to Spain in the semi-finals.
However, the French channel confirmed that Mbappe will not be among those to be included in the rotation process as he will be largely involved in his bid to win a second consecutive World Cup top scorer title.
Mbappe is second on the list of top scorers of the 2026 World Cup with 8 goals, behind Argentina’s Lionel Messi, who scored the same number of goals, but has 4 more assists to the French star’s 3.
Fighting for the top goalscorer title is not Deschamps’ only motivation for bringing in Mbappe, as the French coach is counting on the Real Madrid forward to achieve his personal dream of finishing third at the World Cup in his final game with the Roosters.
Deschamps will leave the French national team after 14 full years in charge since 2012, as he will be replaced by compatriot Zinedine Zidane, the former Real Madrid coach, immediately after the World Cup.
