“The transfer was made as an unavoidable necessity after prison doctors determined that his condition could not be managed at the facility, although he stood up for treatment by his special team in Tehran,” the Narges Mohammadi Foundation said.
Earlier on Friday, Mohammadi fainted twice in a prison in Zanjan in northwestern Iran, according to sources.
He is believed to have suffered a heart attack in late March, according to his lawyers, who visited him just days after the incident. At that time, she looked pale, thin and needed a nurse to help her walk.
Mohammadi, 53, has been in prison since December 12 was arrested during a visit to the eastern Iranian city of Mashhad.
In February, he was sentenced more than seven years in prison. His lawyer said the six-year sentence was for the charge of “collecting and conspiring to commit crimes”.
His family said in February that his health was deteriorating in prison, in part because of the beatings he suffered when he was arrested in December. She said several men beat her and hit her in the side, head and neck.
The Nobel committee condemned Mohammadi’s “life-long persecution” in a statement in February.
The Iranian government has not commented on the alleged attacks.
Before his arrest in December, Mohammadi had already served 13 years and nine months on charges of defying state security and treason against the Iranian government, but was released at the end of 2024 on medical grounds.
