The former international referee of Egypt, Mohamed Adel, believes that the Egyptian national team was not subjected to any injustice in the arbitration against Argentina in the 1/8 finals of the 2026 World Cup yesterday, Tuesday evening.
The Egyptian team bid farewell to the World Cup with a dramatic defeat (3-2) against Argentina, although they were leading by two unanswered goals until the 79th minute of the match.
The match, officiated by French referee Francois Letexer, witnessed many controversial refereeing cases. This caused the anger of the technical staff led by Hossam Hassan and the Pharaohs players, especially after the third fatal goal for Argentina was scored in the 90+2 minutes.
Muhammad Adel, in turn, commented on the arbitration dispute in a telephone conversation with “TEN” TV channel, saying: “I see that we did not lose because of arbitration. According to this referee’s logic, we were ahead of him 2-0 until the 80th minute.”
He added: “In Egypt’s disallowed goal, there was an early foul on Marwan Attia and the VAR called the referee and showed him a running shot over the leg, so the referee was correct in his decision to disallow the goal.”
“This game is completely different from Mohamed Salah’s game when Argentina scored the third goal. In the disallowed goal, the collision happened when the ball was with the Argentine player, as opposed to Salah’s ball. The Argentinian defender first cut the ball, and then there was a natural collision that did not count as a VAR call.”
Regarding Hamdi Fathi’s scramble in the box before Argentina’s third goal, the former international referee explained:
He continued. “We started to focus on the referee after we lost, as evidenced by the fact that no player or member of the coaching staff objected to the referee throughout the whole process.”
He concluded his statements. “The main reason for the loss was never the referee, but the physical and mental breakdown in the last minutes, as a result of which 3 consecutive goals were missed.”
