England vs New Zealand: Tourists seal 17-run win through DLS to level ODI series

Although this ODI series was low-key on the back of England’s T20 World Cup preparations, it marked the beginning of a new era of batting in the longest format.

Veteran opener Tammy Beaumont was dropped, Jones moved to the middle order, so was the new-look opening partnership of Emma Lamb and Jodie Greycock.

For Greycock, who has been number three for Essex this season, 21 has been a tough streak. Again, she looks speculative on the New Zealand seafarers.

Both openers were caught behind as Rosemary Myer and Bree Ealing found plenty of movement in the air, before former skipper Heather Knight dropped the anchor on 28 until she too touched the keeper.

Capsy and Freya Kemp, mainstays of England’s midfield for years to come, have led the recovery but, given the constant rain clouds that taunt them, look unsure when to launch a counter-attack.

After the break and reduced overs were assured, a sluggish home field made scoring difficult and Kemp fell to a stunning diving catch at long-on by Mair with her first real shot at goal.

Only six boundaries were scored after the restart and Kapisi picked the gaps in a big outfield, but Jones took a late cue in her 21-ball to save England’s innings from collapsing.
