Tomorrow, Sunday evening, hours away from the decisive confrontation between Argentina and Spain in the final of the World Cup, Latin American countries are witnessing an unprecedented phenomenon of preferring the victory of the European team at the expense of the regional neighbor, in open violation of the traditions of continental solidarity.
According to Agence France-Presse, a mass wave of sarcastic images and critical comments spread across Brazil, Mexico, Colombia and Chile, most notably a composite photo of Spanish star Lamin Yamal wearing a Brazil national team jersey with the caption “The hope of the Brazilian people”.
Colombian sociologist German Gómez believes that “the solidarity dynamic with Argentina has collapsed”, noting that social media has fueled stories accusing the Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) and its president Gianni Infantino of protecting Argentina’s national team in arbitration.
The phenomenon is outside of the historic conflict between Brazil and Argentina, as many believe that referees have given Tango controversial decisions throughout the tournament, despite FIFA and pundits backing those decisions.
Francisco Santos, a Brazilian fan from Sao Paulo, said: “I’d rather Spain win a second title than Argentina win a fourth.”
Accusations of racism have also cast a shadow over Argentina’s image, particularly after chants of abuse were directed at black French players following their victory in Qatar in 2022, and after an incident during the current tournament insulting a black American broadcaster, IShowSpeed, prompted FIFA to formally condemn racism.
Mexican professor Jorge Negro, an expert in sports anthropology, notes that “this tournament has proven to be highly political given the controversial decisions, including allowing American striker Folarin Balogun to play despite being sent off after President Donald Trump’s phone call to Infantino.
In response to criticism, Lionel Messi said at a press conference. “We’ve proven that nobody hands us anything on a golden platter, whether they like it or not,” while one of Argentina’s Fernet drink brands mocked the controversy with the slogan “We’re insufferable.”
Despite the prevailing position, some still cling to regional solidarity, as Peruvian student Valentino Tocto said: “I will support Argentina because it is a South American country,” trying to preserve what is left of the spirit of continental belonging.
