Carlos Alcaraz: Tennis star aims to return from injury at Cincinnati Open, Emma Raducanu not in draw


Carlos Alcaraz enters next month’s Cincinnati Open as the world number three nears his return from a wrist injury.

The seven-time Grand Slam champion last played on tour in April when he suffered a concussion Barcelona Open injury.

He has since withdrawn from the French Open and Wimbledon, missing the opportunity to defend his Roland Garros title.

Alcaraz will miss the Canadian Open, the next Masters tournament on the calendar, which takes place Aug. 2-13 in Montreal.

But he wants to feature in the Cincinnati Open, also a Masters event, which runs from August 13-23.

The 23-year-old will be looking to prove his readiness at the US Open, the last Grand Slam of the year where he is the current champion.

Alcaraz is also Cincinnati’s champion after Janic Ciner retired from their finals last year due to illness.

The dominant Sinner has won five Masters 1,000 titles so far this year and he is coming off the back of a second consecutive Wimbledon win for Montreal.

English interest in Cincinnati will not include Emma Radukanu who withdrew from Wimbledon for one reason. Stress fracture on his lower leg.

The 23-year-old Radukanu is struggling to be fit for the US Open, which starts on August 30.

Jack Draper will have to rely on a wildcard if he wants to compete in Cincinnati, but there is a place for new British number one Arthur Ferry.

Ferry rose to a career-high ranking of world No. 36 after reaching the semifinals at Wimbledon.
