Aston Villa: Why Unai Emery is navigating a much-needed rebuild and not a nightmare transfer window ahead of Morgan Rodgers’ departure | football news

After ending a 30-year wait for silverware and qualifying for the Champions League again, Aston Villa have been rocked by player departures and injuries, forcing them into an unexpected rebuild.

Youri Tielemans, Villa’s metronomic midfield maestro whom Unai Emery once referred to as his son, Joined Manchester United in a £35m deal.

Chelsea agree record-breaking £117m deal to sign Morgan Rodgers And looked set to miss the season before kicking a ball after rupturing an anterior cruciate ligament while at the World Cup with Belgium.

The departure doesn’t stop there either. Lucas Digne, 32, looks set for an exit with Paris Saint-Germain ready to trigger the £8.5m release clause inserted in his contract.

Four players who made a total of 172 appearances for Villa last season now leave four gaping holes at the heart of Emery’s side.

It’s been a tumultuous start to summer, and here, Sky Sports By analyzing all…

Nightmare windows or well in need of remodeling?

Any sale would cause panic but Villa’s situation is unique given the player’s merit they are missing out on.

Rodgers rose to hero status at Villa Park. Since joining from Middlesbrough in January 2024, he has gone from a young prospect to a fully-fledged England international capable of delivering in emphatic style on the Premier League stage.

Villa were aware that Europe’s elite were on the move and an offer of £117m, set to beat Elliott Anderson’s British record transfer to Manchester City, could not be turned down.

Although undoubtedly one of the premium talents in English football, a return of 14 goals in 55 appearances last season can be replaced. Especially when considering the financial boost his sale will provide Emery.

Tieleman’s departure, however, will sting. The midfielder has been integral to their style of play, offering composure on the ball and an innate ability to unlock defenses with a vision and passing ability that will be hard to replace. Without him, Villa’s win rate dropped from 53 percent to 41 percent.

Aston Villa's record with and without Yuri Tielemans

The club did not want to sell and keeping the core of their Europa League winning side together, with goals from Tielemans and Rodgers on that famous night in Istanbul, was always the choice. But instead of fine-tuning the squad this summer, their hands will now be forced to rebuild.

Who is hiring Villa?

They had the second-highest average age in the top flight last season at 28, and the change in recruitment is already evident.

Villa are entering a new era under Emery and although it comes in unfortunate circumstances, the early signs are already exciting.

In anticipation of Rodgers’ departure, they swooped in on Newcastle’s deal for the Freiburg midfielder. Johan Manzambi and now complete a club-record £59.5m Moved to sign the promising 20-year-old.

He was a breakout star for Switzerland at the World Cup, scoring two goals and adding two assists before suffering an injury that sidelined him for a 3–1 loss to Argentina in the quarterfinals.

“We now have a diamond in attack. A street footballer who needs to be given freedom.” Former Freiburg and Switzerland player Bruno Berner said Sky Sports About God. “We can use him flexibly, more defensively in midfield, but also on the wing.”

Take a look at Johan Manzambi’s five best moments for Freiburg in the Bundesliga since the record began in 1966, with the 20-year-old becoming the youngest player to score five World Cup goals.

When you consider Emery’s affinity for getting the best out of players, especially flexible prospects like their new 20-year-old “diamond”.

Villa have agreed a £38million deal to sign Joao Gomes, 25, from Wolves and are in the running to add Joao Palhinho to their ranks on loan, with the building blocks of their new-look midfield now assembled.

Manzambi and Joao Gomes breathe life into an aging squad. Palhinha’s arrival will add top-flight experience and vital leadership to the ranks.

Factor in the potential return of Boubacar Kamara, who has been sidelined since January with a knee injury, wearing the No.8 shirt once worn by Tielemans, and you have an engine room capable of competing across all fronts.

The quick and efficient business unfolding from Second City points to a team that was prepared for chaos rather than reacting in panic.

Digne has been solid since joining from Everton in 2022 but with him approaching his 33rd birthday and Ian Mattsen waiting in the wings, an exit marks the best outcome for either side.

Rodgers’ departure, meanwhile, leaves a seismic gap going forward.

Armed with the significant transfer fee the club will receive, as well as the squad better placed than Jack Grealish in his £100m move to Man City in similar circumstances, Villa are primed to strengthen and a move for a winger is said to be imminent.

Selling some of your squad’s best talent is never seen as a blessing, but in this particular situation it shouldn’t be seen as a curse either.

Emery never shied away from a challenge…

Emery is well versed in weathering these types of storms and has a proven track record of dealing with injuries of this nature.

Tielemans and Rogers are only the last named to replace him. Jacob Ramsey, John Duran, Moussa Diaby and Douglas Luiz all left – and the hysteria to replace them followed.

But with Emery, the man who masterminded Villa’s rise from relegation threat, on that famous night in Istanbul to win the Europa League, the club has a quiet figure at the helm who will work tirelessly to find solutions.

His side were goalless in their first four Premier League games last season, with their first effort in the league coming in a 1–1 draw against Sunderland on 21 September.

Even his confidence wavered during the time he sat the team down and admitted he was worried. But they went from the gloom of their poor start to the joy of ending the club’s trophy drought to bookmark the campaign.

Emery has never shied away from a challenge and is the latest to replace Tielemans and Rodgers. Full focus will be on ensuring Villa build on the foundations of their recent success, rather than reminiscing about it in the years to come.

Your opinion!

daz: No player is bigger than the club. If Rogers wants to go, then bye! But £117m seems low. £130m would be appropriate; But the club knows what they value him. Chelsea seems an odd choice, isn’t it in Europe? We believe in Unai!

Stuart: We had an aging squad, and desperately needed to add to it. Losing Tielemann would be a big blow for Emery to find the right player. Rodgers was patchy last season and could be replaced. A left back, another midfielder and at least two wingers are needed. Want Summerville and Rashford.

Matt C: Emery must have the final say on the exit so if he signs it trust the man who got us European football.

WJ: A rebuild was always inevitable. This squad is aging and probably needs a squad shakeup after years of fine Emery coaching. He took this crop of players and got what the club wanted from him: a trophy. A permanent Champions League club will be the next goal.

GAVFC: I am very optimistic about the changes as I believe they can keep us competitive. Tielemans and Rogers are perfect players to sell because of their wages and Rogers’ transfer value. UTV.

Sam: We have one of the oldest squads in the league and some very highly paid players. A rebuild is needed and there is no better time than now with Champions League football next season. Rogers was very hot and cold. £117m is a brilliant bit of business for us.
