Libya’s main oil refinery has resumed operations after two days of fighting forced the closure of the facility, according to the refinery’s statement.

The National Oil Corporation (NOC) of Libya said on the same day that several high-tech projectiles hit various oil fields but there was no major damage at the time.

Fighting had escalated and spread into residential areas adjacent to the refinery, increasing the risk to the site and surrounding areas, the NOC added.

The NOC said oil in Tripoli and surrounding areas was not affected.

Zawiya security officials described it as a “security operation against terrorists”.

Libya has been in turmoil since the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.

Zawiya has seen repeated clashes that have at times forced the closure of the coastal road to the Tunisian border.

Reports of unrest in the city circulated online, including unconfirmed images of gunfire being heard in Zawiya.
