Britain’s Adam Yates has been pulled from the Giro d’Italia. Heavy accident on Saturday.
Yates, 33, hit a barrier at high speed in a wet descent in a massive crash involving around 30 riders. Two of his teammates suffered broken bones and were taken to hospital.
Although Yates managed to finish the stage at Veliko Tarnovo in Bulgaria, he lost 14 minutes to the leaders.
His team is UAE Team Emirates-XRG, outsider: “Adam Yates suffered a heavy abrasion and a concussion to his left ear.
“He was initially evaluated on site for the concussion, and was cleared to continue, but later showed signs of late concussion. He will not start the third phase.”
This was the first Grand Tour that Yates competed in that he would not finish. He has seven top-10 finishes overall in Grand Tour races.
Teammates Jay Vine of Australia and Marc Soler of Spain were seriously injured in the crash. Vine suffered injuries and an elbow fracture, while Sola has a pelvic fracture.
The team said Yates, Vine and Soler will be monitored by medical staff before traveling home in the coming days to recover.
Yeats’s twin brother Simon Zero won last year.
Guillermo Silva Thomas of Uruguay is leading this race after two stages.
