Sean Strickland won the UFC’s middleweight championship for the second time in his career on Saturday night, defeating Khamjat Chimayev via split decision at UFC 328.
Strickland won two scorecards 48–47 and Chimayev took the other scorecard 48–47 in front of 17,783 fans at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
It was Chimayev’s first professional loss after 16 bouts.
American Strickland, the second former middleweight to regain the title, put the belt around his waist after the fifth round in a fight in which neither fighter was ever in serious danger. His shiny new fashion accessory was helpful as Chimaev did the honors for him inside the cage.
It was a loss Ace does not rise to the level of bad mood build-up.
The fighters tapped gloves to start the fight and the pre-fight animosity never spilled into the cage.
Strickland, 35, first won the 185-pound belt in September 2023 and lost it in his first title defense to Drickus du Plessis the following January.
