Police officer Zahid Khan told the Associated Press that a suicide bomber and several terrorists detonated a car bomb near the security post. Soon, multiple explosions were heard and a security post collapsed due to the explosion, he said.
Pakistan’s Dawn newspaper reported that nearby civilian areas were also heavily damaged by the blast, with two people injured.
The Reuters news agency, citing security officials, said that after the bombing, there were police officers who rushed to the scene to provide assistance.
Police chief Sajjad Khan told Reuters that more casualties were feared. He added that the fighting is still going on and the extent of the damage will be known only after the operation is over.
Police sources told Reuters that the militants also used drones in the attack.
Ambulances from rescue agencies and public hospitals have been dispatched to the scene, while officials say emergencies have been reported at government hospitals in Bannu.
Neither group immediately said it was important. However, such an attack could lead to another war on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.
The worst fighting in years took place between the allies-turned-enemies in February, with Pakistani jets inside Afghanistan that Islamabad said were targeting military bases.
Fighting has decreased, and border skirmishes sometimes break out, but no curfew has been lifted.
Islamabad accuses Kabul of harboring armed groups that use Afghan soil to plot against Pakistan. The Taliban denied the allegations and said terrorism in Pakistan was an internal problem.
The Pakistan Taliban, also known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), and allied militias have carried out similar attacks in the past. The Pakistan Taliban is a separate group but is often allied with the Afghan Taliban, which seized power in Afghanistan in 2021.
