The UN has condemned the conflict in the occupied West Bank as ‘dangerous and a sign of humiliation for the Palestinian people’.

A Palestinian family in the occupied West Bank has been forced by Israel regularthey say they were under military protection, to exhume their father’s grave and bury him, which the United Nations opposes as “disgusting and disgusting”.

Eighty-year-old Hussein Asasa died on Friday and was buried in the village of Asasa near Jenin.

His son, Mohammed, said the funeral was coordinated in advance by the Israeli army, which issued all the necessary permits.

However, as soon as they buried the body, the residents of the country threatened Asasa’s family, and ordered them to exhume the body saying that it was buried in a place that was part of the Israeli settlements. Under international law, such settlements are considered illegal and are not recognized as part of Israel.

“They said that the place is permanent and that burials are not allowed. We told them that it is the cemetery of the village, not part of the people,” said Mohammed Asasa.

The family had no choice but to comply with the colonists’ threats to use a bulldozer to exhume the body themselves.

According to the Palestinian Wafa news agency, Israeli soldiers were present during the fighting and forced the family to bury their loved one elsewhere.

“We found out that (the settlers) had already dug the grave and found the body,” Asasa said.

“We continued digging and took the body and buried it in another grave.”

The Israeli army is refusing to give instructions for reburial of the family, saying that the soldiers were sent to the area after receiving reports of clashes between residents of the area. The army said that the soldiers seized the digging tools from the occupants and remained at the site to “prevent further clashes”.

The UN Human Rights Office condemned the incident.

“This is appalling and a sign of the humiliation of the Palestinian people that we see happening throughout the OPT (Occupied Palestinian Territories). It leaves no one behind, dead or alive,” said Ajith Sunghay, head of the OHCHR office in Palestine.

The rise of settler violence

Attack on the residents to climb since Israel launched its war against Palestinians in Gaza in October 2023.

On Friday, settlers carried out several attacks across the occupied West Bank, attacking a child and setting fire to houses and cars.

In February, Amnesty International warned that international indifference is leading to Israel’s illegal occupation of the occupied West Bank – an area seen as crucial to any future Palestinian state.

A human rights group accused Israel of “blatantly” expanding illegal settlements.
