Britain’s Adam Yates lost nearly 14 minutes to rivals on the second stage of the Giro d’Italia after a massive crash with around 20 riders on a wet descent – which saw two of his teammates hospitalized.
The UAE-Team Emirates rider, 33, is a contender to win the overall pink jersey, but was bloodied and covered in mud after hitting the Armco barrier at the pace.
Yates will be assessed by team medical staff before confirming whether he will continue in the race, but his dreams of emulating twin brother Simon’s remarkable overall victory in the race last year are all but over.
The 221km stage from Veliko Tarnovo – the second of three held as part of the three-week race Grande Partenza in Bulgaria – was won in a sprint by Uruguay’s XDS-Astana’s Guillermo Thomas Silva from a short group, Germany’s Florian Stork of Guillerio Todd and Guillerio Silva of Liddle-Trek.
Yates’ teammates, Australia’s Jay Vine and Spain’s Marc Soler, left the race after the crash and were both taken to hospital, UAE team boss Mauro Giannetti told TNT Sports.
The peloton of about 183 riders reached the right, downhill corner at about 60 km/h.
Solar was the first rider to go down after both wheels slipped in the wet corner, causing a huge pile-up, which also saw Britain’s Jake Stewart of NSN Cycling crash.
Several riders suffered severe skin burns and ripped lycra, after which the race was suspended for several kilometers.
Similar crashes have been seen at the Giro in recent years, as spring rains pressure riders to make up time in difficult conditions.
Hot favorite for the overall pink jersey, Jonas Wingard, avoided the crash with 21km to go and formed part of a small breakaway group, leading much of the later stage.
He eventually finished 21st in the same time after a larger chasing group caught him in the last few metres.
