The right-wing candidate who won, David Farley, has advocated immigration and agricultural reform.

Australia’s far-right party One Nation has won a seat in the country’s Parliament for the first time, according to the results of the primary election.

David Farley, a former business consultant, is on course to win the by-election in the southwestern Australian state of Farrer, which is located in the state of New South Wales, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported on Saturday.

Farley had 59.1 percent of the vote, compared to 40.8 percent for opponent Michelle Milthorpe, according to the ABC. The Labor Party, which has a large majority in the smaller constituencies, did not contest a candidate for the seat.

“It’s obvious, Farrer’s next member is David Farley,” ABC poll analyst Casey Briggs said in a news release. “It’s not an immediate result.”

One species ‘at the end of its origin’

Farley, who has advocated reducing immigration and agrarian reform, will fill the seat left vacant by the resignation in February of Sussan Ley, leader of the Liberal Party.

The result is the first time One Nation, which was founded by politician Pauline Hansonhas won a lower house seat in its 30-year history. Farley, speaking after his victory, said the party had “reached the end of its prime” and was “going through the roof”.

Outlining his political priorities, Farley said he would pursue immigration policies based on the needs of Australia’s labor market, particularly in agriculture. “We’re not going to disrupt our industries that depend on quality products, by taking immigrants into this country,” he said. “But we can’t please people to come here and have our money, our wallet and not give us anything.

He also said that he will try to lower the cost of living. “We will have policies that are relevant to Australia, not the world,” he said.

‘Show the anger we have’

Milthorpe praised Farley for his election victory and said the next two years will be a test for One Nation, which now faces the challenge of translating the anger it has seen into real results. He said: “It will clearly show the anger we have out here. “The challenge is to do something about it.”

Farley’s victory has little bearing on the parliamentary majority, where Labor has 94 of the 150 seats.
