Sofiane Boufal shines again
Morocco international Sofiane Boufal has revealed her ambitions to take part in the 2026 World Cup, while stressing that her top priority remains saving her club Le Havre from relegation in the French league.
Boufal returned to the French league last January, arriving from Qatar, and was quick to make his mark with Havre.
His remarkable performances saw him win the player of the month award last February, giving coach Didier Dijar’s side a huge boost in their fight for survival.
“A natural goal, but not an obsession.”
In a long interview, the 30-year-old football player spoke frankly about his international ambitions, saying: “As professional football players, we all strive to participate in the biggest international tournaments. Today, I play in a competitive league, in the big league.”
He added: “I am lucky that I can play continuous matches without physical problems and that I am gradually recovering my level. So this is a goal for me.”
Experience and history with lions
Boufal pointed to his career with the Moroccan national team as a factor supporting his ambitions, saying: “Especially my history with Morocco, the tournaments I’ve played and the experience I’ve been able to get. Therefore, it is natural that they talk about this World Cup for me.”
Survival of Le Havre
But the former Southampton and Angers player was keen to stress that his main focus is on another job, making it clear:
“I will support them if they don’t elect me.”
In a statement reflecting his maturity and professionalism, Bufal added: “If this participation in the World Cup comes, I will be the happiest of people and if I am not selected, I will support them until they go as far as they can, God willing.”
