Rory McIlroy says the return of LIV golf handicappers would be “good business” for the PGA Tour, with the future of the breakout series in doubt.
In April, the Public Investment Fund (PIF) of Saudi Arabia announced that it would Take out billions of dollars in support At the end of the year.
In response, LIV announced a “strategic evolution” – including a newly formed independent board – as it sought to find replacement financial investors.
But Masters champion McIlroy began a series of criticisms when he questioned his ability to attract new backing: “That’s what one of the richest sovereign wealth funds in the world says when they think you’re too valuable to them.”
Earlier this week, Bryson DeChambeau said he would focus on growing his YouTube channel and “play whatever tournaments you want me to” if LIV doesn’t survive.
“It’s a question of whether (players) want to come back,” said McIlroy, after a second-round four-under 67 put himself in contention for the Trust Championship.
“We’ve actually seen the quotes over the last few days. And you know, it all seems to depend on what happens at LIV.
But if they have the option to come back and play on traditional tours, you know, (PGA Tour Chief Executive) Brian Rolapp said anything that strengthens this tour, anything that strengthens the DP World Tour, I think everybody should be open to that.
“It’s just good business practice.”
The six-time major winner added: “I think everybody knows where I feel about LIV and where it is in the game of golf. I don’t think I need to rehash any of that.”
“It never happened to me and look, that doesn’t mean LIV is going to go away. They’re going to go and try to find an alternative investment, whatever it looks like.”
