The Supreme Court in Virginia overturns the plan of the Democrats in the US | US midterm elections 2026 News

The Supreme Court of Virginia issued a new electoral map which was designed to flip four US seats held by Republicans to Democrats, and give President Donald Trump’s victory in the run-up to the November mid-term elections.

The Virginia Supreme Court ruled that the Democratic-led state legislature violated the constitution when it enacted a constitutional amendment on the ballot to allow for repeal of the ban. Voters narrowly approved the amendment on April 21, but the court’s decision will render the results of the vote meaningless.

“This violation undermines the integrity of the referendum vote and renders it null and void,” the court said.

Democrats hope to win an additional four U.S. House seats under Virginia’s redrawn map, as part of an effort to counter Republican elections elsewhere by forcing Trump. That ruling, combined with a recent US Supreme Court ruling significantly weakened the ruling Voting Rights Actit has increased the chances of a Republican contender in the midterms.

The decision could boost Republicans’ hopes of keeping their majority in the US House mid-term. Democrats pursued Virginia’s measure as part of a global battle to redraw US state boundaries that the Republican president launched last year.

In its ruling, a Virginia court agreed with Republicans’ claims that Democratic-Majority state legislators did not follow the proper process to approve the referendum before it was put to the voters. A few days after the referendum, a federal judge stopped the government from issuing a confirmation of the result, calling the language “extremely misleading”.

Trump reacted to the election by Social Truth, calling it “a great victory for the Republican Party, and for America, in Virginia”.

Good for Republicans

The Virginia court’s decision is increasing Republican power in the redistricting battle. This was followed by the decision of the Supreme Court in the US, with the support of the majority of people who like to accept, which showed the main part of the Voting Rights Act, opening the door for the southern states led by the Republicans to eliminate the districts that have a democratic-Black and Latino majority. Black and Latino voters tend to support Democratic candidates.

In the past, Republican-controlled states, such as LouisianaAlabama and Tennessee have taken steps to draw new maps in time for the November elections, even suspending party elections to give legislators time.

Trump last year pushed Texas Republicans to tear down their electoral maps and draw new lines targeting the five Democratic House incumbents. After Texas did, California Democrats redistricted, targeting five Republicans. Other countries have followed suit.

Virginia voters approved the Democratic-backed map in the April 21 special election by 51.7 percent to 48.3 percent, according to an Associated Press tally. The referendum was the final step in a complex legislative process to block the constitutional amendment, approved by voters in 2020, which would have placed the ban in the hands of a bipartisan commission.

If the Virginia map were to be invalidated, Republicans could gain an advantage in 10 House seats across the country, pending the results of recent Republican efforts in Louisiana, Alabama and Tennessee.

Republicans can lose just two seats in the November election to retain control of the US House.

Remapping, known as redistricting, is done once every ten years to reflect changes in the population in the same way that the national census is done every 10 years. Efforts underway and recently completed by both Republican and Democratic state legislatures were fueled by a desire to engage.

The decision of the United States Supreme Court only accelerated the war. In addition to states that already want to redraw their maps immediately, some states have made it clear that they want to pursue a ban on redistricting before the 2028 elections.

Under Virginia’s state constitution, two consecutive legislatures — with state elections in between — must approve proposed legislative changes for a vote.

A majority of Democratic lawmakers approved the amendment in October, just days before the November election. The Democrats, who won more seats in the vote, proposed the amendment again in January and planned a referendum in April.

Republicans filed several lawsuits, arguing that there was no election to intervene because early voting had begun when the amendment was enacted and that lawmakers had violated other procedures in moving the process forward.

US House Speaker Mike Johnson praised the decision on X Friday.

“The Supreme Court of Virginia has confirmed what we have believed from the beginning – the impeachment, impeachment, and defamation was unconstitutional. This ruling is a victory for democracy and ensures that the people of Virginia are fairly represented in Congress.”

House Speaker Hakeem Jeffries criticized the court’s decision, saying that reversing “the will of more than three million voters will not succeed.”

“We are looking at all possible solutions to this shocking decision,” he wrote on X.
