‘Nurse, the joypad!’: eight great medical games | Sports

LLike other Western countries, our family is playing the medical drama The Pitt, which is enjoying its live appearance in the modern emergency department. So far the series has not promoted video game connections (although there have been a fun parody), but fans who want to try their hand at medical malpractice should not despair. Here are eight of the best medical games that span over 40 years of horror surgery. Grab some hand sanitizer and come here.

Microsurgeon (1982, Mattel Intellivision)

Created by producer Rick Levine himself, this marvel took players down to the ground and placed them in the blood of a sick patient where they combined the diseased cells and removed the nerves. Clearly inspired by the movie Fantastic Voyage, the theme features strange, colorful, almost psychedelic images of the human body. An Atari 2600 console, called Fantastic Voyage, was available a few months later, but with its sleek and simple design, it was dead on arrival.

Life & Death (1988, PC, Mac, Atari ST, Amiga etc.)

This click-and-go abdominal surgery simulation was amazing in its realism. Players have to diagnose various diseases (kidney stones! rupture of the bladder!), before calling them for tests and scales and at the end of the operation when the ECG display shows the victim – sorry, patient – heartbeat. If you think that was not difficult enough, the next step is to move to brain surgery.

Sanitaryaria (1998, PC, mobile since 2015)

Asylum has always been a part of horror games, from the 1981 adventure Asylum to Silent Hill. I’m going to the disturbing emotional joy of a patient waking up in a seemingly abandoned hospital, his memory gone, his face bandaged. As he explores the haunted corridors, the stories of his life come back into view. Very unstable, with many bends.

Emergency Call Ambulance (1999, Arcade)

You have no doubt heard of it crazy taxi, Sega’s busy arcade game about running around the city picking up annoying people. But have you ever played his classic ambulance, Emergency Call Ambulance, about driving around the city transporting seriously ill people? It’s the same, except you’re taking them to the hospital instead of Pizza Hut and every time you hit the road, or another car, their vital signs disappear and eventually collapse, bringing a new depth to the phrase, “game over”.

Trauma Centerer: Under the Knife (2005, Nintendo DS)

If you thought the Nintendo DS was a fun arcade game, you were wrong. Developed by the former publisher Atlus, this interesting game was part of an operation sim, using a handheld screen and a pen to do real things, as well as a book that looked like the lead Dr Derek Stiles walked in a hospital of the future. The game produced a series of morals and a live action TV showwhich unfortunately was never sent.

Operation Simulator (2013, PC, PlayStation, Switch, Xbox)

Unexpected smash hit when it was released in 2013This silly surgery game has you trying to handle multiple patients, while being hampered by (intentionally) difficult controls and bad physics. Crack a rib with a hammer, knock out vital organs, throw your watch in a body cavity – not the wrong medical suit!

Project Hospital (2018, PC)

There is no shortage of good hospital management games – including the most popular Theme Hospital and Two Point Hospital – but I went to offer the most in-depth, realistic ones, which make you manage all aspects of medical care from building a hospital to managing staff and caring for individual patients. You’ll be able to create your own Pitt, and walk around looking concerned about the problem at hand – just like Dr Robby!

The Mofa’s Helper (2022, PC)

Have you ever wanted to live as a young worker in a haunted asylum? Yes you have it; we all have it. DarkStone Digital’s 2022 indie title offers you an opportunity, which requires players to perform daily tasks such as embalming corpses, as well as perform magical rituals to cleanse the souls of the dead. Dark, dark and unsettling at times, it was adapted into a film earlier this yearwhich was good, but not good Autopsy of Jane Doe.
