Rebel Wilson is accused in court of being a liar who said bad things about her friends and rewrote history.
The Pitch Perfect star has faced scathing scrutiny in the final hours of the defamation battle being accused by Charlotte MacInnes, the lead in the musical The Deb which Wilson directed, co-produced and starred in.
MacInnes claims Wilson defamed her in a series of social media posts claiming she was a liar and a salesman who retracted allegations of sexual misconduct to keep her job.
The source said MacInnes told the lead actor – and later quit – he was not happy when his co-producer Amanda Ghost asked to take a bath and shower together.
MacInnes refuses to complain or take back the complaint, insisting he was unhappy when the pair showered in their clothes after Ghost fell ill in September 2023.
MacInnes’ barrister Sue Chrysanthou SC accused Wilson of a “total history review” full of dishonesty in his speech to the High Court on Friday.
She said the Bridesmaids actress had testified that she told local producer Greer Simpkin about the alleged complaint on the day of her casting, but that was disputed in court.
Simpkin testified that he did not hear that Wilson said his friend was unhappy with the incident until it was reported by Ghost a week later.
It was just one example of apparent inconsistencies in Wilson’s testimony that have been dismissed by others, Chrysanthou told the court.
“He is an incredible liar who has said bad, bad things about a number of people and his witnesses have defied him,” he said.
“We are saying that Ms Wilson cannot believe anything she has said.”
The first supervisor lied to Ghost about receiving the complaint to create a rift between him and MacInnes, who he wanted to paint as tough, Chrysanthou said.
Statements from Wilson who accused the young actor of leaking information to the film’s director showed he was trying to damage MacInnes’ relationship with others, he argued.
The undisputed facts of what happened in the bathroom are medical incidents, no one was offended and the witness did not think anything was wrong.
“One cannot think of a lesser place to suffer – to be shaken by the hives and tea provided by (witnesses),” Chrysanthou told the court.
MacInnes has been seriously hurt by her social media posts and has been out of work since performing on stage – a role she had already earned, her lawyer said.
“My client can’t eat, he can’t sleep, he’s worried … (he’s) afraid of what Rebel Wilson will do to him next,” Chrysanthou said.
“No girl dreams of being seduced by a famous man and ridiculed”.
But Wilson testified that the star didn’t appear to have damaged his reputation or his career, pointing to the leading role and six-figure record MacInnes had achieved.
“He’s changed his story, he’s shaken up and he’s been given a lot of benefits,” he said.
Wilson testified that he had seen many photos of MacInnes on international trips and in expensive hotels, some of which were sent to him by the ‘I hate Amanda Ghost fanclub’.
“Before the Deb was unknown and (I) understood that she had no way to go around the world in style,” wrote A’s secretary in his letter.
His lawyer Dauid Sibtain SC will begin his closing arguments on Friday afternoon.
