The El Clásico atmosphere is heating up early
Barcelona full-back Joao Cancelo stressed that the team will go into Sunday’s El Clasico game with one goal in mind: to win, rejecting the idea of a draw even though a point would be enough to officially clinch the Spanish league title in favor of the Catalan club.
Cancelo said in an interview with ESPN. “Barcelona does not have a culture of playing for a draw. We are a team that always wants to win and that is what we will do on Sunday. A win will show which team is the most consistent in La Liga this season.”
“El Clasico is a very important match. It has a special flavor because it is against our eternal rival. It’s a match every player hopes to play and we’ll be looking to get the three points to secure the long-awaited league title.”
Cancelo (31) explained that he has extra personal motivation against Real Madrid after failing to win any trophies with Barcelona in the 2023-24 season while on loan from Manchester City under Xavi Hernandez.
He continued. “I always wanted to play for Barcelona.” This came true for me for the second time this season when I joined them last January on loan from Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia. Unfortunately, I didn’t win any titles the first time around. I hope I can win the league title this season.
Cancelo joined Barcelona last winter, days after they won the Spanish Super Cup at the expense of Real Madrid.
The Portuguese winger praised coach Hansi Flick, noting that his start was not easy. “All coaches expect results. My first weeks did not bring the desired results and I was not given the opportunities I was looking for, but from the moment the opportunity arose, I knew how to use it and I believe that I deserve what I am experiencing now.”

He emphasized that the style of “Barcelona” corresponds to its technical characteristics. “I feel like I’m in a good phase of my career. This club facilitates my playing style. It’s a style of football that suits me perfectly.”
He explained about the preferred position of the right and left defender. “I’m used to it from the Benfica academy. Now it doesn’t matter where I play and I don’t even know where I prefer.
