Tensions in the Real Madrid dressing room erupted into fistfights between Aurelien Choumini and Federico Valverde, an incident that could cost the players dearly, according to disciplinary procedures the club has launched.

The row between the Frenchman and the Uruguayan heated up for the second day in a row before turning into a violent clash that left Valverde with a serious cut that sent him to hospital for stitches.

There is a penalty for playing without pay

Disciplinary consequences are inevitable and are the harshest on the list of domestic sanctions, as sources at Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo say Real Madrid management will launch an official investigation that could end in suspension of players’ salaries for between three and 20 games or a complete dismissal from the team.

The “play without pay” fine is one of the most severe measures taken by Real Madrid in the event of a breach of discipline and is used to prevent any behavior that damages the club’s image.

Valverde and Chuamini look set to be left out of the squad for Sunday’s El Clasico clash against Barcelona at the Camp Nou, which could hand Hansi Flick’s side the Spanish league title if they beat their arch-rivals.
