A long cycling trip to Catalonia
Manchester United and Holland defensive legend Jaap Stam has expressed his personal willingness to intervene to facilitate the transfer of his compatriot Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona to Old Trafford, stressing that the midfielder is an ideal choice to strengthen the ranks of the English team.
Stam said in the statement of the British “Metro” newspaper. “If Manchester United have the opportunity, I will help them. I will cycle to Barcelona and bring him to United.
The former defender’s announcement comes as De Jong’s name is back in England’s spotlight after he was heavily linked with Manchester United a few seasons ago, with Barcelona’s offices reported to have made an €85m bid for him.
Manchester United’s board of directors have made strengthening the midfield a top priority in the transfer market amid a long list of candidates, with Elliott Anderson and Adam Wharton still among the club’s interests, along with Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes, Tyler Adams, Alex Scott and Matthew Fernandez.
Despite the many options, Stam believes De Jong is superior to all other candidates, saying: “I think De Jong is an ideal player. He is very good on the ball and we can talk about his physicality in the English Premier League, because if we look at individual tackles and interventions, he is certainly not the biggest, but he is a great player.”

Stam pointed out the team’s technical needs. “Given Michael Carrick’s style, he wants players who are able to control the ball and control the flow of the match. That way you won’t need to defend yourself too much.”
“Frankie is a world-class player and one of the best midfielders. He is good on the ball, especially when playing from the back, because he directs the play and helps the team to move forward and get into the final third of the attack to score goals.”
