The Instagram app witnessed an unprecedented move after a massive purge of fake accounts, bots and inactive accounts.
The result was immediate, as millions of followers disappeared from the accounts of some of the most famous international figures, causing consternation and controversy on social media.
The Sport newspaper reported that the most famous case involved Saudi Arabia’s Al-Nasr captain Cristiano Ronaldo, who lost more than 6 million followers in just a few hours.
Despite this influence, the Portuguese star remains the most followed Instagram account worldwide.
The impact was not limited to Ronaldo alone, but there were other international figures who also saw a significant drop in followers.
The American captain of “Inter Miami” Lionel Messi lost about 4 million followers.
