Lucy Staniforth: Former England midfielder ‘calm’ with decision to retire from football.

York-born Staniforth was one of a handful of Lions who grew up in academies in England’s northeast and went on to successful careers.

She joined Sunderland’s first team at the age of 16 and was close friends with Lucy Bronze, a former team-mate and current England defender who she used to train with.

A midfielder known for her intelligent movement and passing, Staniforth finished her career at Villa with over 50 appearances in all competitions.

In 2014, she suffered back-to-back anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries to multiple knees, which sidelined her for three seasons.

“I’ve been very fortunate to have been to the places I’ve been and met the people I have,” Staniforth added.

“Football has finally become my life. It’s made me who I am and it’s all I know. It’s huge and I love it. I hate it sometimes because it’s so hard!

“There’s a lot of times you question your worth. That’s something I’ve struggled with throughout my career, knowing who I am off the field.

“Well, I’m happy because I’m no longer the ‘Lucky footballer’. It can be difficult to fit the line, but I’m really happy at the moment.”

Staniforth hopes to “find a new part” of herself away from the game and learn to celebrate her accomplishments.

“I’ve probably been too hard on myself all my life. I’ve always wanted to achieve great things and be this great player with a list of honors,” she added.

“Even though everything is so hard, I’ve learned that I’m very strong. I have to be like, ‘Fair game, it’s not easy.’

“I can go through anything and I’m really proud to be able to do that and still be at the top of my career.

“I’ve tried not to take my life too seriously. I’ve always tried to be a good teammate and lift everyone’s spirits. I hope these skills will lead me to success after football.”
