OhStanding up for a school that celebrates male traditions? It has fallen out of fashion a bit. But it’s a different story when a gay drama delivers the story – a fun story, great laughs and twisted gender stereotypes. Ashley Gavin was a stand-up comedian who hit the internet during the pandemic, and the results – including the “crowd” videos and the podcast We’re Having Gay Sex – have garnered a lot of fans, especially those who are curious. She’s like a best friend or big sister tonight, telling how a woman who dresses like a young car mechanic (and who – tongue firmly in cheek – considers women to be “a bunch of asses”) came to freeze her eggs.
What’s interesting is how Gavin tackles the gender debate, and the usual behavior that pushes the boundaries of what we expect men, women, and even gay men, to do and be. The opener finds “Brazilian homosexual” Gavin giving himself up to waxing. Elsewhere, the New Yorker refutes the argument – while enjoying the discomfort it brings – that the clitoris is actually a “small dick”. Later, he thinks about going inside (which doesn’t sound like a “veil”?) and argues that two “gay guys” having sex with each other is “against God”.
All this is given with great command by the 38-year-old, while fighting the shame of insulting one member, and having to punish another whose irrepressible laughter would ruin the gig. The show ends with the tale of Gavin’s birthing journey, a gift to a comedian who enjoys the X/Y movement. “I am a man, to conceive”, he argues, and he assures us, through actions related to the treatment of estrogen, marriage rituals between humans and animals, and other things that promote male power.
Later, there’s a change of gear, as Gavin sets up a section of the crowd (“my bad job these days”, he says, unenthusiastically). That part is optional; you will soon see it online. But what’s ahead is the greatest hits period of comics that haven’t been rebuilt yet.
