Despite these struggles, both Dasgupta and Yardi are confident that Suryavansi has the talent to play red-ball cricket successfully in the future.
Although he averaged just 17.25 in eight first-class matches for Bihar at the age of 12, he has two centuries in the Under-19 Test against Australia.
“He’s doing things now that players twice his age are doing,” Yardy said.
“You think, if he continues like that, he can play in all formats of international cricket.”
Dasgupta added: “What people notice is fours and sixes but he doesn’t hit fours or sixes every ball. He also defends.
“He has a good defense and a good technique as well.”
But ahead of that and as the only uncapped player in the top 10 of this year’s IPL run-scoring list, some are already wondering if an international call-up could come as soon as this summer.
In June, England hosted India for a five-match T20I series. Can Suryavanshi make back-to-back World Champions squads?
Current opener Abhishek Sharma, the world’s leading T20 batsman, and Sanju Samson – India’s match-winner in this year’s World Cup semi-final and final – will be an almighty challenge.
“It’s a valid question about the way he’s played,” Dasgupta said.
“Another aspect of playing international cricket and having a long career is whether you are mentally prepared for the rigors.
“People in the system have a duty of care to ensure that this talent is properly managed and mentored.
“He should be part of the set-up, not necessarily push him to play straight away, but keep him in the set-up, let him grow in the environment of international cricket and, if possible, play a match here.”
Somerset’s Thomas Rew, his under-19 captain, is already being touted as a future senior England star.
“As good as it is to give young players an opportunity, you want to make sure they have a deep confidence that they can do it,” he says.
“I’m sure (Suryavanshi) has a lot of confidence in what he’s doing now but usually when players go up you don’t want them to think ‘I don’t belong here’.”
That doesn’t mean he’ll be afraid to push youngsters for higher honors.
“You see it in all sports,” Yardy said. “Max Daumann is playing for Arsenal at the age of 15.
“Youngsters are developing faster in all sports – technically, tactically and physically – usually with higher levels of facilities and more exposure to coaching.
“From a coaching point of view we have to make sure we don’t look back to how it was 15 years ago, when players were coming in at 19, 20.
“It’s not really a concern with age if the players are strong enough physically and mentally to deal with the situation.”
