SpaceX supports Anthropic with a data partnership between Musk’s OpenAI case | Technology News

SpaceX is signing a new deal with Anthropic as Elon Musk sues competitor OpenAI for refusing to back its work.

Anthropic has reached a deal to use computers for Elon Musk’s SpaceX, showing frustration with its one-time rival and boosting the industry as a whole in the artificial intelligence race.

Under the agreement announced Wednesday, Anthropic will use all of the computing power of SpaceX’s Colossus 1 facility in Memphis, Tennessee, which houses more than 220,000 Nvidia processors and will provide Claude chatbot 300 megawatts of new power within a month. It is enough electricity to power more than 300,000 homes – as the company led by Dario Amodei wants to promote its Claude Pro and Claude Max AI assistants to subscribers.

The announcement comes as Anthropic held a development day and unveiled a new Claude AI system called “dreaming”. The tool allows AI systems to analyze activity between fields, features, and edit files that store preferences and other information.

Presented as a form of research, “dreaming” comes with management software, or AI software that operates without much human involvement. Amodei has previously warned that AI could wipe out 50 percent of logging jobs in the next five years.

Buoyed by the increase in the SpaceX contract and other recent contracts, Anthropic said it is increasing the Claude Code limit on its paid plans, removing long-term usage caps for Pro and Max accounts, and significantly increasing the number of requests developers can make to its Claude Opus models.

The company said it also wants to work with SpaceX to build several gigawatts of orbital data centers – one of Musk’s main goals and the main driver behind SpaceX’s initial public offering – as the project is expected to be very large and technically challenging.

In his speech at X, Musk said he made the decision to lease computing power to Anthropic after spending time with its leaders last week. Their work to ensure that Anthropic’s Claude AI is “good for people” was impressive, he said.

“Nobody got rid of my damn light,” wrote Musk, who says against OpenAI and their CEO Sam Altman in court for violating his mission to create AI to help people while remaining a non-profit organization.

Challenges of OpenAI

Last week Musk said in court that by the end of 2022, Altman was trying to “steal charity” and that “it turned out to be true”.

Musk, the founder of OpenAI, has said that OpenAI would not exist without him. The world’s richest man said he founded OpenAI after consulting with Google co-founder Larry Page, who felt he had no concerns about AI security.

OpenAI’s lawyers said Musk’s lawsuit was an attempt to sway the Altman-led company in favor of his xAI, which is now part of SpaceX.

Musk’s deal comes as US President Donald Trump’s administration signs new deals with other AI giants, apart from Anthropic.

Tuesday, technology giants MicrosoftGoogle and Elon Musk’s xAI have agreed to allow the federal government to test their new artificial intelligence tools amid concerns about Anthropic technology.

Last week, the Department of Defense made another announcement cooperation with 10 different AI giants using their technology on selected networks. Anthropic was not part of that partnership.
