Google has canceled Project Mariner

Google has released a plug-in for Project Mariner, an experimental product designed to do things for you on the Internet, such as was already said by Wiredand Maxwell Zeff. The Home page for Project Mariner now has the message: “Thank you for using Project Mariner. It was shut down on May 4, 2026 and its technology moved to other Google products.”

Earlier this year, Google introduced a new AI-powered feature, called “auto-browse,” that would perform several tasks in Chrome, such as checking the cost of a trip. Although Google does not say whether it is powered by Project Mariner, it seems to be a response to web browsing tools provided by OpenAI, Mental confusionand OpenClaw.

With the cancellation of Project Mariner, Google may be making room for other AI innovations that may debut at this year’s I/O, which starts on May 19. Google did not immediately respond Seasiderequest for comments.
