Mira Murati, the former CTO of OpenAI, testified under oath that CEO Sam Altman lied to her about the safety of the new AI model. In this video that is shown during the ongoing process Musk v. Altman In a lawsuit Wednesday, Murati said Altman lied that OpenAI’s legal department had determined that a new type of AI should not pass the company’s security team. “As you understand it, was Mr. Altman telling the truth when he said that to you?” Murati was asked about the installation. “No,” said Murati.
Murat said that during his time at OpenAI, Altman made him work hard. His criticism is “completely in line with management,” he said. “I had a very difficult job to do in a very difficult organization. I was asking Sam to lead, and to lead clearly, not to interfere with my ability to work.”
The security situation around one of OpenAI’s GPT models was an example. Murati testified that after speaking with Altman, he discussed it with Jason Kwon, who joined OpenAI in 2021 as its general counsel and is now the company’s CEO. Murati said there was a “disagreement” between Kwon and Altman’s statements; “I confirmed that what Jason was saying and what Sam was saying were not the same.” To be safe, he said, he made sure the sample passed through the board.
This is not the first time that Altman has been accused of lying. Cofounder Ilya Sutskever, in a 52-page memo to OpenAI’s board was read in the depositionsaid that Altman “shows a tendency to lie, insult his judges, and contradict each other.” Former OpenAI member Helen Toner, in the 2024 podcast when he discussed Altman’s firing in November 2023, he also said that OpenAI executives had shared evidence with Altman’s team “of lying and fraudulent behavior at various times.” Murati agreed with Altman’s description of him arguing with management and undermining him.
The Board, after firing Altman, he said that “He has not always been honest in his communications with the board, which hinders his ability to fulfill his mandate. The board no longer has confidence in his ability to continue to lead OpenAI.” (When Altman was asked and Seaside As to why he thought the team didn’t believe him, Altman said “That would be a good question for them.”)
Murati was appointed as interim CEO after the OpenAI board removed Altman. However, in testimony, he criticized the board’s decision and said “OpenAI is in serious danger of isolation.” He left OpenAI in 2024 and then it was established OpenAI partner, Thinking Machines Lab.
