A new episode in the series of crises of the former “Barcelona” star
On Wednesday, the disciplinary committee of the Spanish Football Federation announced the punishment of Gerard Pique following the incident that took place in the match between Andorra and Albacete last week.
Since last December, the Disciplinary Committee has threatened strict measures against Pique due to his repeated behaviour, and the latest incident has worsened his situation.
Andorra, owned by Pique, witnessed the clash with Albacete, which ended in a 1-0 victory for the hosts. After sharp objections from Pique to the refereeing panel, tense events ensued.
According to the referee’s report, there were several direct confrontations between Pique and the referees. At half-time, the ex-Barcelona player approached the referee objecting to his decisions, before the situation escalated significantly in the tunnel leading to the dressing room, where he shouted threats at the referee and approached him sharply, objecting to his play.
It didn’t stop there as he continued his protest after the referees stormed into the dressing room, urging them to record the incident in the match report.
Tensions continued even after the final whistle as the report stated that Pique had followed the refereeing team into the car park and continued his sharp objections to the match’s decisions. The report also cited his emotional statements, including a call for managers to leave with a security guard, and his warning about being attacked in other circumstances, stressing that what happened would have been more dangerous in different countries.
AS newspaper reports, the Disciplinary Committee decided to disqualify Pique for 6 games due to “slight violence towards the referees” and banned him from accompanying the team for two months.
The same penalty was applied to sporting director Jaume Nogues, while club president Ferran Vilaseca was suspended for four months.
Team representative Christian Lanzarote was suspended for three games, and four more members of the technical staff were also punished.
In addition, the stadium’s VIP area and personal box, where Pique usually sits during matches, will be closed and the club has been fined €1,500.
