How the great wave of Israel brought chaos to Lebanon


In the year On April 8, 2026, at 14:15 local time, Israel launched a massive attack on Lebanon – just hours after US President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire between the US, Israel and Iran to end the war in the Gulf.

Israel said it hit 100 targets in 10 minutes, ending hopes that a ceasefire in Lebanon’s war with Iran would end violence there.

The latest conflict between Israel and Hezbollah – a Lebanese militia and an Iranian-funded and armed political party – began on March 2 after the group fired rockets into Israel, which responded with widespread airstrikes and ground invasions of southern Lebanon.

More than 2,600 people have been killed in Lebanon since then, according to Lebanon’s health ministry, and around a fifth of the population has been displaced, according to the United Nations.

The BBC’s Nawal Almaghafi has been piecing together what happened that day and meeting those who lost loved ones in one of the deadliest chapters in the country’s recent history.
