The president of OpenAI was forced to read his writings to the jury

The documents cited in the lawsuit were written between 2015, when OpenAI was launched, and 2023, when Brockman and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman were summarily fired as leaders on the security issues of the OpenAI board.

Musk hopes Brockman’s posts paint him as a money-loving executive who, in the past, has not cared about OpenAI’s work.

Musk’s attorney, Steven Molo, spent the first day of Brockman’s testimony taking a stand and demanding that Brockman be held accountable for the greed his documents revealed.

For example, Brockman wrote a newspaper in 2017, at the same time he testified that Musk made a decision: Musk would have full control over the profit-making arm of OpenAI, or OpenAI would be unprofitable.

In writing this, Brockman seems greedy, writing that “we’ve been thinking that maybe we’ll just make a profit. Make the money sound good to us.”

And Brockman, of course, made a lot of money when OpenAI created a for-profit arm in 2018, and it is worth about $30 billion today. “Money, will it cost me $1B?” Brockman wrote in 2017, pondering whether Musk was a “glorious leader” who wanted to run OpenAI or whether he would bring Altman back.

During the debate, Molo asked if Brockman would consider returning $29 billion to the nonprofit arm. But Brockman said no, pointing out that he received the price well before releasing ChatGPT raised the price of OpenAI. He also emphasized that he helped grow the most profitable non-profits in the world.
