Greece’s decision to tap into their huge Australian diaspora – more than 400,000 people in the country have Greek ancestry – will inevitably draw some comparisons with Italy.
The Azzurri made their first T20 World Cup earlier this year by qualifying for the sub-regionals.
None of Italy’s squad at that tournament was born in the country, and they selected five Aussie-Italians including two brothers – Manentis and Moskas.
Senior figures involved in the Greek federation, however, told BBC Sport that they would be somewhat wary of the ongoing integration of Australian players with Greek heritage, such as Constas.
Greece’s cricket scene is largely centered around the island of Corfu, where the game has been played for more than two centuries and developing homegrown talent, including pathways to the national team, is seen as a major priority.
Around two-thirds of their squad were born in Greece under coach Tim Delor for the European qualifiers in Finland.
A couple of UK-based players in their team are Dimitrios Trindafilithis and Christodolos Bogdanos, who both play club cricket in Yorkshire.
Greece’s bid to clear the first qualification hurdle for the T20 World Cup will not be straightforward, having been drawn in a group with favorites Germany.
Also in their pool are Portugal, who are set to be bolstered by the presence of experienced former Australian all-rounder Moises Henriques, who was born in Madeira.
BBC Sport understands that Portugal may be able to call up opening batsman Ricardo Vasconcelos depending on his commitments with Northamptonshire.
