Former police officers exposed their injuries

Police chiefs have recently announced that all forces will introduce mandatory recording of suicides.

This comes after senior detective Penelope Schofield was published. Prevention of future death reports, External Following the death of Sussex officer Benjamin Websdale, who was being investigated by the Independent Office for Police Conduct at the time.

In the year Since 2022, the Police Federation has announced that more than 100 police officers and staff have committed suicide across the country.

More than half of police suicides – 32 out of 55 – will be recorded in the UK from 2022-24. Officers under investigation.

Matthew Scott, Kent Police and Crime Commissioner, and the National Association of Police Crime Commissioners lead for mental health, have called for changes.

“We don’t know the full extent of this problem and we need to do everything we can to look after people and, unfortunately, record people when they take their lives,” he said.

Crime and Policing Minister Sarah Jones said: “Our police officers and staff put their lives on the line and work under extreme pressure every day.

“They show extraordinary courage and resilience in protecting us, and it’s important that we protect them in return.

“When we introduce our reforms to the police, we will ensure that their safety is prioritized, protected and not seen as an afterthought.”
