McGruther has been asked repeatedly. His answer, though, may be a little surprising.
Usually parents or grandparents could be pointed to, but none of the Fife natives could take him to his local club. He, quite literally, went along himself.
After the 10-year-old was introduced to the game through a taster session at school, he decided to go to Abbeyview Bowling Club. And to the surprise of many at the time, he stuck to it. Thank God she did.
McGruther told BBC Sport Scotland: “I used to go to the club after school and they’d laugh at me coming up on my scooter and they’d be like, ‘Who is that?’
“For me, it’s the social aspect, the friends you meet all over the world that really keeps it going.
“I definitely missed a lot of events and things because I was always focused on training, but it’s nice that it’s all worth it.”
