A few months later, Yann Diomande, one of football’s top young prospects, is about to get his dream of joining a European powerhouse.
The 19-year-old is signing for Real Madrid in what could be described as a record deal.
The giant of Spain It will pay more than £100m for Diomande. – They made a new record sale for RB Leipzig and are expected to become a new record signing for Real Madrid.
Likewise, Diomande has become the most expensive African player in history.
In less than 18 months, he went from being a complete unknown to seemingly rising to stardom.
Only scouts and insiders knew he was a lanky wing player known for its basketball program, having previously played for Florida-based DME Academy.
Diomande had trials with Chelsea, Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Rangers and Olympiakos but remained unsigned until joining Leganes in La Liga.
He increased his market value significantly in just a few months and 10 games in the Spanish top flight, eventually signing for RB Leipzig for €20m.
The Red Bull-backed club believed they had found a diamond in the rough. And they were right. A little closer to the game, Diomande looked like one of the best players in the Bundesliga, scoring 13 goals and providing 10 assists in his first full season in Europe.
Initially, Leipzig had intended to hold on for another year in the hope that the market price would rise even further, but demand was too high.
With Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain and finally Real Madrid showing strong interest in the winger, he had to agree a deal for his native Ivory Coast, a Bundesliga side who was set to play at the World Cup.
With the ever-increasing price tag in an inflated transfer market, almost any prospect can demand fees in the nine figures, but Diomand is unique. A highly athletic and highly creative winger, it is not far-fetched to consider him already among the best dribblers in Europe.
There’s obviously still a level of rawness to his game, but he’s made leaps and bounds in the last 12 months and there’s no reason why he can’t develop further at 19 years old.
His passing ability is somewhat underrated because he is the profile of a dribble-first winger. Diomande linked up well with right-back Radel Baku at Leipzig and could look even stronger with support from the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Marc Cucurella.
Diomande can play on both wings. The right-footed player was mostly employed on the left at Leganes but found a home on the right at Leipzig. He played for Ivory Coast at both World Cups.
