A powerful earthquake struck the Japanese island of Kyushu on July 28, forcing the evacuation of more than 150,000 people. The earthquake caused power outages, damaged roads, partially collapsed castle walls and destroyed footbridges. More than 40,000 households lost power and many people were missing after a chimney collapsed at a paper factory in Kumamoto Prefecture, according to police quoted by Japanese public broadcaster NHK.
