A member of parliament was giving media interviews in the English Channel when a French patrol boat opened fire.
Chris Phillips MP was being interviewed on BBC South East about small boat crossings when he passed what he believed to be a French warship.
According to the BBC’s Michael Keohane, sounds like gunshots were heard in the background.
The BBC has spoken to the French coastguard for comment on what happened.
Keohane said midway through the interview, 17 shots were fired.
There was no announcement or training exercise at the site, and Phillip said he believed it was an intimidation tactic or a warning shot.
“It felt like an intimidation attempt to stop covering migrant crossings,” he said.
