What is that?
In a move that reflects Saudi club NEOM’s desire to invest in talent, the club has handed its former captain Ahmed Hegazi a high-profile administrative task just two days after he announced his final retirement from the stadiums to start a new chapter in his football career outside the green rectangle.
NEOM has decided to appoint Hegazi as assistant sporting director to Kyriakos Dorikas of Greece, with a mission focused on selecting new signings and strengthening the squad in the current summer transfer window, drawing on his extensive experience in European and Arab football.
The club officially announced the appointment via its digital platforms as the statement read: “Ahmed Hegazi’s journey continues inside the club, but outside the green rectangle. After years of giving, Hegazi is embarking on a new journey in a leadership career, who ended his career with the slogan NEOM, with greater passion and ambition to depart as Assistant Athletic Director.”
The statement adds: “Captain Ahmed welcomes you back home and we wish you all the best in your new mission,” in a message that clearly appreciated what the former international has provided to the team.
The appointment represents a natural continuation of benefiting from Hegazi’s legacy within the club’s corridors, after he played a key role in leading the team to historic promotion to the Roshan Saudi Professional League in 2025.
The move comes as part of a growing trend by Saudi clubs to bring in former players in administrative and technical roles, with the aim of benefiting from their on-field experience and extensive connections in the football community, which increases the chances of success in the transfer market and ensures the continuity of ambitious sporting projects.
