As France spoke, the United States withdrew from the United Nations Security Council meeting.

The U.S. delegation to the UN Security Council meeting in France spoke against comments comparing Washington’s human rights voice to dictatorships.

A diplomatic row erupted on Friday after the US joined North Korea and Russia in voting not to extend Volcker’s term as Turkey’s UN high commissioner for human rights.

After the vote, France’s UN mission in Geneva said, “America will become a champion of human rights.”

Mike Waltz, the US ambassador to the United Nations, accused France of supporting the man who was giving away democracies, making them “the world’s worst oppressors”.

Turkey has criticized Russia’s war in Ukraine and Israel’s actions in Gaza.

It is the U.S.’s rejection of the Security Council’s emergency meeting on Russia’s war in Ukraine, which France is talking about.

A senior US official, Dan Negre, said the US delegation would continue to take the same position until France “removes its humiliating and disrespectful remarks”.

Turkey’s second term in office was passed with 144 votes in favor, 10 against and 13 abstentions, highlighting the tensions between Washington and the United Nations.

Washington has withdrawn from several UN bodies by cutting funding to UN agencies.

On Friday, US Ambassador Jeff Bartos criticized Turkey’s reappointment at the summit, saying it would have consequences that would “tolerate a lack of progress, backroom deals and abuse of UN positions”.

“The United States will immediately review our involvement, participation and funding.”

However, French Ambassador Jerome Bonafont on Friday described Turkey as a “strong and neutral” voice of conscience during his first term in office.

Deputy UN spokesman Farhan Haq declined to comment on the US trip.
