Ecuador: Confronting Gang Members at the Heart of the Drug War


BBC journalist Orla Guerin travels with the Ecuadorian police who are struggling with high levels of drug crime.

Drugs are being imported into Ecuador from neighboring Colombia and Peru – two of the largest producers in the world. Powerful domestic gangs with ties to Mexican cartels and the Albanian mafia are helping to move cocaine forward.

The country’s Ministry of the Interior announced that Ecuador’s murder toll exceeded 9,200 people last year.
