Dillian Whyte believes both Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua could retire this year after their long-awaited fights.
Fury and Joshua are expected to finally share the ring in November after they both emerged victorious from their warm-up bouts, with America now the likely location for the British heavyweight blockbuster.
But the Briton’s rivals appear to be in the final chapter of their careers as Joshua got off the canvas twice before stopping Cristian Prenga in the second round, while Fury chose 46-year-old Mariusz Wach as his opponent before securing a seventh-round stoppage.
White, who has fought both Fury and Joshua, said Sky Sports: “It’s hard to say (who will win) because the boxing pundits will pick Tyson Fury and the hardcore boxing fans will pick Anthony Joshua because AJ’s got power and Tyson Fury’s legs are slow, so I’d call points (or) AJ Fury with the stoppage.
“Maybe, both men can hang up their gloves after the fight. When it’s over, they can say, listen, we did everything, Tyson won all the belts, AJ became a unified world champion, they can just say, yeah, that’s it.
“I think they can both hang up their gloves and then it will be a sad day for boxing.”
Joshua returned to the ring for the first time since being injured in a car accident in December that claimed the lives of two of his close friends, Sina Ghami and Latif ‘Latz’ Ayodele.
After Joshua was floored in the first 20 seconds, White suggested it was a sign that his old rival was not yet in the right frame of mind to restart his career.
“Prenga may not have been the best boxer in the world, but he could punch,” White said.
“In boxing, anyone can get knocked out. I’ve been knocked out multiple times in different fights.
“It’s hard to tell if his punch resistance is gone, you know, I think it’s more mental than punch resistance.
“I think he’s in a place mentally where he’s been through a lot.
“Listen, AJ’s not my friend, we don’t like each other, so you know, I’m just being honest.
“I think it was nervousness and not being mentally prepared for the type of fight that Prenga put him through in the first round.”
After a loss to Moses Itauma last summer, White has returned to training and hopes to sharpen his skills in a comeback fight before targeting a bigger name.
“I want to fight Derek Chisora, Andy Ruiz, Miller,” he said. “These are guys from my era that I haven’t fought and I want to fight them.
“I understand I lost in the first round.
“I’m not confused – I understand that I need a fight to get myself back into contention, so whoever.
“I just want to get the fight back and get back in the ring, shake off some ring rust and get my groove back and then fight whoever I have to fight.”
