Wildfires are a ‘reminder’ of extreme climate challenges – William

The Prince of Wales said wildfires in the UK and Europe were “a stark reminder of the challenges we face with extreme climate change”.

More than 300,000 people have been displaced so far. Another intense heat wave is on its way from parts of France and Spain as wildfires continue to blaze across the continent.

“Our thoughts go out to all those affected by the devastating bushfires across France, Spain and the UK,” Prince William wrote in a post on X.

“We are extremely grateful to the firefighters, emergency services and volunteers who work tirelessly in extremely difficult conditions.

“These events are a reminder of the challenges we face in an ever-increasing climate and the importance of protecting people and nature.”

Climate change is raising temperatures around the world – but especially in Europe. According to the Copernicus Climate Service, it is a continent that is warming at twice the global average rate.

This is leading to increased summer temperatures, greater pressure on Europe’s water supplies and more intense wildfires.

France has been hit by its worst fires in two decades, with officials in the Spanish capital Madrid saying they are the worst the region has ever seen.

People are urged to put away disposable barbecues, dispose of smoking materials and put them in the trash to prevent wildfires.
