The project is complete
Journey complete Paolo Maldini and Leonardo While leading the new project of the Italian federation and the Azzurri national team, the duo resigned after rejecting the names nominated to take over the position of the new coach of the national team.
and benefits Sky Sport ItaliaThe federation’s technical director Maldini and his adviser Leonardo tendered their resignations to Italian FA president Giovanni Malago this afternoon after outright rejecting Andrea Pirlo’s candidacy amid a political crisis over a sponsorship deal with Russian betting company Vonbet.
The new president of the federation, Giovanni Malago, announced just 16 days ago the appointment of Paolo Maldini and Leonardo as the technical director and adviser of the federation, respectively, and Maldini was appointed the chairman of the Club Italia project.
Just 16 days after the appointment, and after holding a meeting with Italian league clubs at League headquarters (a day that saw contacts being made with Ancelotti and Guardiola, who rejected the offer), Maldini and Leonardo decided to shelve their project.
Immediately after Guardiola’s rejection, Maldini turned to Andrea Pirlo, his former colleague and friend, who shared the same vision with him for an artistic project dedicated to the national teams.
The disconnection of the option to sign Pirlo due to the aforementioned Russian sponsorship crisis made Maldini consider resigning as he did not feel supported and protected by the president of the Italian Federation.
This came after several hours of discussion and consideration of possible alternatives to coach the national team, such as Thiago Motta (a name suggested by Leonardo after he worked with him at Inter and Paris Saint-Germain), but the pair ultimately decided to resign and inform Malago of the decision.
Current developments suggest that the search for a new national team coach is resuming, led by Malago himself, who has suggested the name of Roberto Mancini, who has always been his first choice.
