Lauren Bell held her nerve as Southern Braves won a last-ball thriller against MI London to maintain their 100% start to this year’s edition of The Hundred.
Needing eight runs off the last five deliveries of the match, Bale kept his cool as MI fell one run short of Braves’ total of 126-7.
Danny Watt-Hodge laid the foundation for MI’s chase with an unbeaten half-century, but he couldn’t find a boundary in four needed off Bale’s final delivery.
Bale was impressed by his plucky team-mates as they made it three wins from their first three matches to top the standings while winless MI were left to rue how they managed to chase them down.
Earlier, Maia Bouchier gave the Braves’ innings some early impetus with a 22-ball 31, before she caught a slug-sweeping Hayley Matthews at deep mid-wicket.
South African batsman Laura Olvard then put on a 60-run third-wicket stand with the more agile Jemimah Rodriguez, who scored 32 off 22 balls only to be caught by Mathews.
But Braves’ innings faded towards the end in the face of some solid MI bowling as Mathews finished with 4-22.
West Indies all-rounder Mathews then provided MI with a solid platform, hitting four boundaries in his 28-ball 32 only to miss one straight off Yi Wang.
Watt-Hodge and MI captain Holly Armitage looked to have things under control to depart for 27 after Sarah Glenn feathered an edge into the gloves of Liesel Lee.
MI then struggled to find the middle of the bat as Wong and Sophie Molyneux bowled hard to increase the pressure.
Victory was still within MI’s reach when Bell came forward to bowl the final set for the Braves, but neither Wyatt-Hedge nor Nicola Carey could find the clean strikes needed to beat the fielders as they fell agonizingly short.
