Early in the year 2025, Atlanta resident Samuel Tunick was on his way home from a trip abroad. When he arrived in the US, customs officials asked for his Pixel phone, which was running a version of Android called GrapheneOS. Instead of giving away his information, Tunick cleverly used the program to remove everything. Now, he is facing federal charges.
The first hearing in the case was held last week, according to The Guardianwhile prosecutors and assistants said Tunick was also questioned at an international airport. During the meeting, agents were “looking for anything illegal.” However, Tunick’s legal team says they have kept him under surveillance for his own safety.
Tunick was involved with a group called Defend the Atlanta Forest, which protested the construction of a law enforcement training center in an area often referred to as Cop City. What Tunick didn’t know, according to his lawyers, was that he had been placed on a watch list and that Customs and Border Protection had negotiated a warrant to detain him upon arrival in the US for “suspected criminal activity.”
