Fawaz is on a 10-year ‘settlement pathway’ and will be 43 before he is eligible for British citizenship.
In this way, people must complete 10 years of legal residence before applying for permanent residence. Being granted that status allows them to stay in the UK without immigration restrictions.
British citizenship can be applied for if the relevant requirements are met.
The UK has shorter settlement routes, including five-year routes, for people who meet the requirements of certain immigration categories.
The route a person takes depends on their immigration status and their individual circumstances, including family life, work, residence and personal life in the UK.
It is not clear whether the only option for Fawaz was the 10-year path or why that path was implemented in his case.
The Home Office said Fawaz’s earlier decision to put Fawaz on a 10-year rehabilitation pathway had not been decided by the department.
Without a passport, Fawaz cannot accept potentially lucrative fights in countries like Saudi Arabia or the United States. But he can take such chances in UK.
He believes that if he had picked up a passport in his early 20s, he would have already become a world champion.
“The government is denying that opportunity, which is very wrong,” Hearn says, adding that Fawaz’s access to overseas battles would also benefit.
“I could get a big fight in America, I could get a fight in Saudi. This is a story that resonates everywhere in the world. How can you not be allowed to travel?”
